First FRCR, Part 1, physics module
Physics for the First FRCR, in one place.
Revision notes, true/false banks, interactive quizzes and full timed mocks, sorted by syllabus topic, plus two live physics labs. Everything opens on this page.
Study by modality
Each topic holds its notes, question banks and quizzes. Topic exams sit with their topic. Choose one to see its files.
How an ultrasound image is made
The transducer
A row of piezoelectric elements in the probe face turns voltage into short pressure pulses, then turns the returning echoes back into voltage.
Coupling to the skin
Gel fills the air gap. Without it about 99.9% of the sound reflects at the skin, because the acoustic impedance of air is tiny compared with soft tissue.
Pulse and echo
Each pulse travels at about 1540 m/s. The scanner times every echo and places it at depth d = c·t / 2, roughly 13 µs of round trip per centimetre.
Brightness mode
Echo strength becomes brightness, one scan line at a time across the sector. A cyst is black with brighter tissue behind it; a stone is bright with a shadow beneath.
Ultrasound lab
Change the frequency and watch the trade-off: higher frequency sharpens the speckle but loses depth. Turn the gain down to see the cyst's posterior enhancement and the stone's acoustic shadow.
B-modeSimulated image
- Left: anechoic cyst with a bright back wall and posterior acoustic enhancement.
- Centre: small vessel, anechoic lumen with echogenic walls.
- Right: echogenic stone casting an acoustic shadow.
Mock exams, in the order I sat them
Every paper follows the real format. Sit them timed, then read the explanation for each statement.
Practice bank
Drill statements one at a time by module with instant explanations, sit any of the 30 mocks with a timer and navigator, and track your weakest topics. Progress stays on your device; no sign-up.
Open the practice bankLibrary
Search by file name, or filter by topic and type. Files open in the reader on this page.
Add a link
Link to a Google Drive file, a video or a website. To add a new PDF, put it in the files folder and add it here as a link to its path.
Nothing matches that search. Try a shorter word.
How to use the pack
Topic by topic
Read the notes, work through the question bank, then test yourself with the interactive quiz.
Full mocks, timed
Start with the early papers, then the final-stretch set in day order. Review every explanation, right or wrong.
Final days
The equations sheet and the final revision texts: one pass the night before, one the hour before.
